When Petra and Riley returned home later that night, they found an envelope hidden in the newsstand near their apartment. When they closed the door, they opened the letter while Riley read the inscription.

Bug planted successfully. Monitoring conversations. Talking about a uranium enrichment facility. Our intelligence experts say it's for a big bomb. Standby for further instructions.

"A bomb?" Petra said, peering at Riley with a quizzical look. "What kind of bomb?"

"I've heard of this type of bomb," Riley nodded, her face suddenly turning pale. "It's a nuclear device with the capability to wipe out an entire city with a single explosion."

What?" Petra said. "How is that even possible?"

"It's a physics thing," Riley said. "Something to do with splitting the atom. If you can do it with the right material, it releases a tremendous amount of energy. I had no idea the Germans were that close to developing such a weapon."

"So what do we do now?" Petra said, peering at Riley with a worried expression.

"We're going to have to speed up our plans," Riley said. "If the Nazis complete construction of a nuclear bomb, it can completely turn the tide of the war. Besides wiping out hundreds of thousands of troops, if they were to drop it on London or Moscow, it could break the resolve of the alliance."

"How do you know so much about this bomb?" Petra said, shaking her head.

"I studied some physics at college in the States," Riley said, still not ready to tell Petra that she'd come from the future. "It's got something to do with Einstein's theory of relativity."

"Albert Einstein?" Petra said. "The famous physicist who fled Germany when Hitler rose to power?"

"Yes, but there are many other German scientists with advanced knowledge of nuclear physics. This is apparently the nerve center of the operation."

Petra picked up the letter from Jim and peered over its contents.

"Captain Miller said to standby, awaiting further instructions."

"I don't think we should wait," Riley nodded. "We have no idea how far advanced their development program is. We need to get our hands on the plans for that fortress as soon as possible and identify the scientists involved in its operation. They're almost as valuable as the bomb itself. We can't afford to let them fall into Russian hands."

"Russian hands?" Petra said. "Aren't they our allies?"

"Maybe now, but they're no friend of the west. Stalin will be just as bad as Hitler when it comes to seizing territory. We can't destroy the fortress only to have the technology fall into the hands of another world power."

"There's something that you haven't been telling me," Petra said, placing her hand over Riley's. "You know things nobody else could possibly know. Where are you really from, and how did you get mixed up in this operation?"

Riley paused for a long moment, contemplating whether she should tell Petra how she really landed here.

"I'm not sure you'd believe me if I told you the truth," she said.

"You've already shown that you have special powers," Petra smiled, gripping Riley's hand.
